The Pros And Cons Of Free Guitar Lessons Online

Whether you just starting to learn how to play the guitar or are someone with a bit of musical knowledge, guitar lessons are essential if you want to perfect your craft.  Longer working hours and busier schedules make it very hard to have private lessons with a guitar teacher.

It can be quite a challenge to find time to practice the guitar, or any other new skill for that matter, with all the family, work, school and friend obligations and activities that you already do on a regular basis.  This is one of the main reasons why online educational courses have become so popular over the past ten years or so.  This may be the one way that an aspiring guitar player can fit in time for learning the guitar.

Free Guitar Lessons Online

There is an almost endless number of guitar tutorials available online.  Many of them are free.  Are the free guitar lessons that you find online as good as paid lessons?  Everyone has their own opinion.  However, when it comes to free guitar lessons line, the old saying of "you get what you pay for" holds true as far as I am concerned.

Most free online guitar lessons online start with an instructor showing you the right way to hold the guitar.  Then they quickly explain the frets and strings.  Next they usually dive in and start teaching you how to strum a couple of chords.  That is all well and good.  However, most of these online free lessons don't teach you anything about chords, notes, musical theory or other concepts and ideas that you need to know about.

The lessons are perfectly fine if all you want to be able to do is memorize a couple of songs and play your guitar at a family gathering.  However, you probably are never going to be able jam along with your favorite songs from the radio if you are taught this way.

These free courses teach you how to play the guitar just like parrots are "taught" to speak.  The way they learn to talk is from mimicking the human voice.  When they talk, they don't understand the words they are saying.  All they are doing is copying the sounds they have heard.  That is not the way you want to learn how to play the guitar.

Play The Way You Practice

I'm not saying online free guitar lessons have no value or aren't any good.  In fact, I have run into several online free guitar lessons I thought were quite informative that were given by musicians with very good intentions who were attempting to help aspiring guitarists.  The main problem that I have with these kinds of lessons is they begin with teaching a few basics to you before jumping straight into playing.

Playing the guitar definitely isn't a spectators sport.  Therefore, it is a good thing to promote playing at the same time that you are learning.  However, some basic steps get skipped and they dive into some things way too fast for the average beginning guitar player.  This probably wouldn't be any problem for someone who already has some guitar knowledge.  However, for someone who is an absolute beginner, it can be quite frustrating, confusing and can damage one's ability to play the guitar.

What Is Your Learning Style?

So how can you find a good free guitar lesson online that will teach you what you need to know to accomplish your guitar playing goals?  The first thing you need to do is conduct some research.  Find several free videos online and watch them.  This will give you a good feel for the curriculum, teachers and teaching methods.  It should also give you a sense of whether or not you are able to follow along with what they are teaching.

All of us like certain teaching styles and learn in different ways.  Some people are better visual learners.  When they can see what they are trying to learn, their brain solidifies the information.  Other people can learn very well from reading books.

When it comes to the guitar specifically, you do need to learn in a visual way.  Concepts and ideas that you could learn in five minutes or less by having a visual example might take an entire book written by a teacher on the topic.  Free guitar lesson, from this aspect, are quite good since videos are provided.

Are Online Free Guitar Lessons Effective?

My honest advice is these free courses need to be taken with a grain of salt.  Most of the lessons do contain a lot of guitar instruction.  However, usually there is a lot of jumping around and key details are skipped over.  For complete beginning guitar players, this can be quite frustrating and confusing.

The greatest musician in the world isn't necessarily the world's best teacher.  I do suggest that you eventually find a course or instructor that you need to pay for.  Then use free lessons for reviewing things you have already learned or use them as practice.  This will help you with tracking your progress.
